El Festival De Los Viajes (CD)
This album is like the perfect comedown. Those afflicted by the headache de rigueur proper of the post inhalation of herb could use this self-titled debut by this highly atmospheric Argentinean band to let go of the hangover and let the slumber begin. El Festival de los Viajes are nothing heavy, but let their inclusion in deaf sparrow assure you of the depth of their sound. By 'atmospheric' I mean that this is highly cinematic. Especially the western feeling, seemingly inspired by the soundtrack work of Ennio Morricone for the spaghetti classic The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Now, don't go around thinking that that's silly either. Argentinians not only have incredible steak and awesome soccer, but their territory covers enough land to breed enough gauchos to take over the western region of the US. That said, the awashed psychedelic feeling of this album also has another more incongruous side; some of the songs circle around like mantras destined to rule your mind. "Conjuro de los Matados" with its cult-like chants sticks to your skin tighter than spandex. "Paraiso" is wicked, heavy in ambience, its soul is half spirit/half tangible sound. A ghostly female voice haunts around its lullaby-like spine. The vocals of Federico Wolman deserve their own paragraph, a tone deaf delivery that makes the surreality of the music all the more unbelievable. It's all masterfully built really. No surprise really, once you find out that El Festival de los Viajes is comprised of members of bands like Dragonauta and Poseidotica; both of which are highly recommended, it all makes sense. El Festival de los Viajes is their escape from loudness. A hazy trip heavy only in the Rhodes piano and in its melancholic tripped out spirit.
