Transcendence (CD)
The spiritual widow of John Coltrane, Alice, performs a selection of very special mantras combined with chants and two haunting instrumentals. These seven tracks are all based on Indian themes. All are exceptionally and accurately done, especially the mantras/kirtans, which remain true to their Hindu origins, while the instrumentals are more improvisational and free-form. This is practically not a jazz album, but Coltrane's take on spiritualizing jazz means. This album features a string quartet on several tracks as well as a vocal choir on several others. It is suitable both as background music during meditation and for enjoyable listening.
