Modern Man (CD)
An opening statement of a drum roll and horn fanfare opens the album as Stanley declares his power as coming 'from the pluck of a string'. This goes into the smooth, almost soft rock styled 'He Lives On (Story About The Last Journey Of A Warrior)'. After this? It's back to a couple slices of serious funk 'More Hot Fun'. There is stadium rock power in 'Opening (Statement)' and 'Closing (Statement)', with a slice of 'pure' jazz in 'Interlude: A Relaxed Occasion'. The title track and 'Rock 'N' Roll Jelly' are the standouts, with the power trio of Beck, Clarke and Appice on the latter. A full orchestral sound is presented on 'Got To Find My Own Place'. A truly sublime work recorded in 1978 but no less relevant.
