Rough Times (CD)
If you think of today's rock as the corpse of what it was, this German band is one of the few that can recover it and make it dance to the rhythm of the early 70s. Kadavar spell, able to recompose the musical material in decomposition and to give it life again through beautiful engaging songs, keeps happening once again. The German trio transmits an energy to its musical creature, which few others in this era of classic hard rock revival can claim. An energy that this time manifests itself through physical force (powerful riffs, lowered tuning, on stoner rock borders) as well as through agility (elastic groove in perpetual motion) and what I could call "psychic force" (psychedelic melodies dilating and deforming songs). Exactly this "mental" component is the most peculiar feature of Rough Times, what differentiates it from the three previous albums. The linear fluid structure of the songs is the same that made Berlin songs real jewels. But in this album there are developments refracting the melodic light according to the trajectories of The Beatles in the second part of their career (the raw mighty cover of Helter Skelter as bonus track is not a mere coincidence). If to make dance the corpse of rock music, in the past the three Germans had been possessed by Led Zeppelin spirit (sometimes floating above their first two records), now Kadavar personality is so strong that any new spirit possessions can only increase it.
