"Macabre Eternal" was a fondly remembered comeback album for Californian deathbringers Autopsy, spruced with some new ideas and hints of progression for the future. Ironically, "The Headless Ritual" has almost no continuity with the previous album and instead hooks itself in the band's ever popular early days, more specifically their "Severed Survival" and "Mental Funeral." Not a bad choice of eras to return to (hey, they could have gone back to "Shitfun,") and given how many newer bands out there directly emulate earlier Autopsy efforts its probably not that surprising. Who better to resurrect the past than someone most directly associated with it?
