This, the Stones' third US LP, was assembled according to the same basic formula as its predecessor, 12 x 5 - the A-and B-sides of two singles, five tracks from a larger work (in this case, the British album The Rolling Stones No. 2), and a couple of previously unreleased tracks, rounded out by one track ("Mona") from the group's debut UK LP. The result is a collection that, while it may not boast any of the Stones' all-time great tracks, is nonetheless my favorite of the band's first three US LPs, showcasing their ability to put across songs in various flavors of R&B, soul, and rock & roll while still imbuing each one with their own signature sound. Where the first two LPs had moments of overreaching, here they seem firmly in command throughout.
