The Congregation (CD)
Great prog metal album. I admitedly was very sceptical of it as i didnt enjoy Coal at all, but this one ups the melodies and cheese, and it makes it all that much more enjoyable for me. Its still very technical and its clear that these guys have hard ons when they are playing songs with weird time signatures, but when it produces songs as great as these i cant complain.
That said, its a really cheesy album, in particular these swolling vocals that soar like a power metal vocalist wet dream. They wont convince anyone who isnt into prog metal before. Instrumentally its very interesting though, as they bring in some instruments and sounds like synths not used in this genre usually. These help give the album a more weird and alien nature, which help it standout more. Unfortunatly, this comes at the cost of guitar riffs and solos, which are often missed in this one.
Its a long album, but it keeps delivering the goods from beginning to end. These guys just need to turn the cheese into epicness and they have a genre classic in their hands.
