Once upon a time there was a group of four young art school students from Leeds who had the brilliant idea to mix punk rock, danceable funk rhythms, and neo-Marxist philosophy to form one of the most seminal bands of the past 30-odd years. Every element of this band was distinctive and essential, from the politically themed sloganeering of Jon King, to the morose code guitar-scratching of Andy Gill, to the solid rhythm section of bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. Not only did this band manage to release two undeniable masterpieces, Entertainment (1979) and Solid Gold (1981), but on the strength of those two records gained a cult fan-following, massive critical acclaim, and managed to influence a number of artists ranging from the Jesus Lizard to Red Hot Chili Peppers.
