Your Queen Is A Reptile (CD)
Great Britain's new jazz avant-garde is funky, pulsating, funny and could also hit here", the US-American Rolling Stone recently titled an article about the "danceable new wave" of British jazz. Among the spearheads of this movement is saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings with his band Sons Of Kemet, who are now releasing their third album "Your Queen Is A Reptile" on the Coltrane label Impulse! The quartet, unusually composed of tenor sax, tuba and two drums, reinforced by guests such as Jungle pioneer Congo Natty (a.k.a. Rebel MC), saxophonist Nubya Garcia and poet Joshua Idehen, serves a bubbling mixture of jazz, Afrobeat, Grime, Dub, HipHop, Caribbean and Middle Eastern sounds. After a highly acclaimed performance at the 2017 New York Winter Jazz Festival, Sons Of Kemet were immediately invited back for 2018 and celebrated by the New York Times as a particularly "powerful and stylish band". "'Your Queen Is A Reptile' offers a slimmed-down alternative to the sometimes overlong and exuberant cosmic performances of artists like Kamasi Washington," All About Jazz said. "The nine tracks of 'Your Queen Is A Reptile' are models of precision and sharpness.
