Made up of current Monster Magnet drummer Bob Pantella and bassist Jim Baglino, Riotgod deliver their sophomore release, Invisible Empire. The two New Jerseyites' alter ego allows them to express their own ideas and music apart from the Dave Wynthrop-led Monster Magnet. The rhythm section might be the same, but you can't really compare Riotgod to sounding like Monster Magnet. Riotgod offer more of an organic and free-form style of rock 'n' roll than their full-time gig does. The stoner elements are present on Invisible Empire, but mostly, it's just great rock 'n' roll. Their brand of '70s-style rock, '90s grunge and psychedelic rock is an eclectic blend with a fresh, vibrant but familiar sound. They've actually expanded their sound a little from their debut. Pantella and Baglino's local NJ connection, vocalist Sunshine, gives the band its distinctive spark. His voice is so charismatic and electric, often times sounding like Chris Cornell or a young Robert Plant. Guitarist Garrett Sweeny also shines on Invisible Empire. His heavy, distorted chunky riffs and fiery solos plow through your speakers at full force. Riotgod's foundation is steeped in Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin influences. The Zeppelin influences really stand out on the acoustic CD closer "Rebirth," which will remind you of Zep in its glory days. This is a great follow-up to their debut. Riotgod has a modest attitude and a great rock 'n' roll spirit. The songs are easy to follow along to and the melodies and harmonies really stand out.
