Unzen Pilot is a quartet of musicians from Porto, Portugal, which have been playing in several projects for the last few years (HereBDragons, Alla Pollaca, Sektor 304, Beast Bode, Ghosts of Port Royal...). During these years rooted in the underground scene - for some, the only scene - they deepened and perfected his unique style of improvisation, semi-psychedelic rock or free rock . Based on improvisation sessions over small ideas, rhythmic and melodic patterns allied to the complex and powerful percussion they create instrumental travels, organizational structures and atmospheres of sound that move forward with the hypnotic groove of Can, Miles Davis' Electric or even the minimalism of Steve Reich, Tortoise and UI and through peaks and breathing, strong riffs, heavy drones and soundscapes. Eduardo Magalhães and Leonel Sousa on guitar, João Filipe on drums and Rui Leal on the bass contribute to a whole that is definitely more than the sum of the parts exploring the instinct and the "musical organic" to reinvent themselves on every performance.
In their self-titled debut record which came out in April 2012 on vinyl by record store/publisher Louie Louie, explore their live recordings and add something more to these experiments in the studio while channeling their free and vital sound .The music grows, expands and evolves almost as a natural organic process - to build something that is beyond the concern of categorization, not belonging to any particular musical era. The temptation to describe their music as psychedelic-rock or post is valid, however the word "inventive" does full justice to the music of Unzen Pilot. They are not within the more traditional labels such as krautrock, prog, stoner-rock or spacerock, though none are completely out.
