When The Shake Spears broke up in mid-1968, the remaining members Chris Stone, Alan Escombe and Mick Carter founded Fynn McCool (named after Finn McCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill), a figure in Irish mythology). Mick Fowler (ex-Grapefruit) completed the first line-up. Later line-up changes included two further ex-Grapefruit members, Bob Wale and Geoff Swettenham, as well as Garth Watt-Roy, who joined East of Eden afterwards. Fynn McCool's only, selftitled album is now very rare and highly sought after. It was released on RCA Records without the group's consent, based on unfinished (demo-) recordings. The tapes with the final versions of the songs got lost soon after the group split up in February 1972.
