An album of 12 songs, none of which exceeds 4 minutes and every track sounds like Nick Lowe's having a good time. In an age where we have to get through so many albums full of boring uninspired fillers, Nick Lowe gives us an old fashioned all killer/no filler big fun album. What the world needs is a lot more albums like these.
This mix of country and soul sounds like the album we might hear from Van Morrison again one day if he'd ever come up with a collection of songs that's more than just average. All of these songs are great, but it's "A better man", "Long limbed girl", "The club", "People change", "Love's got a lot to answer for", "The other side of the coin" (a song he wrote for Solomon Burke, this is his own recording) and "Feel again" stand out.
Nick Lowe also remains a great vocalist, listeners who only know his radio hits "I love the sound of breaking glass" and "Half a boy & half a man" will be surprised how good he sounds singing soul and country music. Like the best wines, Nick Lowe just gets better with age. There aren't that many musicians you can say that about.
