1968 was the year in which the flower power movement turned into the opposite. The previously peaceful "counterculture" spiraled out of control. Students rioted on the streets of Paris and the joy of youthful self-realization turned into anger and aggression. Everywhere the celebration of innocence was drowned.
But it was also the year that, after the uncharacteristically psychedelic outing of Their Satanic Majesties Request, the Stones decided to strip everything down and start again, building on the foundations of what they believed in, which never had anything directly to do with getting high or fighting The Man with bricks and bottles in the street.
